Applying Maths in the Real World: Density & Pressure

The first week of term has been busy — and a reminder that life is all about learning! During a Moodle upgrade, I ran into some unexpected problems with images not transferring over. It took a couple of days to fix, but the silver lining is that I’ve come away with a much clearer understanding of how to store and manage questions for the future. A small setback, but a big step forward in experience.

I’m pleased to share that I’ve now completed a brand-new module on Density and Pressure, suitable for both Foundation and Higher GCSE students. This module shows how maths isn’t just numbers on a page — it’s a powerful tool for understanding the world around us. Whether calculating density in everyday materials or exploring the effects of pressure, students will see how these concepts link directly to real-world science and problem-solving.

Tips for Success

One of the best ways to succeed in maths is to look for connections beyond the classroom. When you can link a formula to a real object, experiment, or scenario, the ideas stick much more strongly. So when working on Density and Pressure, think about swimming pools, air in a balloon, or the pressure of tyres on the road — maths is everywhere!

Puzzle of the Fortnight

First, let’s reveal the answer to the last puzzle:

The Magic Number Puzzle

A number is multiplied by 3, then increased by 12. The result is the same as if the number had been doubled and then increased by 18.

Let the number be x.
3x + 12 = 2x + 18
x = 6 ✅

So the magic number was 6.

Now for this week’s challenge:

The Mystery Triangle
In a triangle, one angle is twice the size of the second, and the third angle is 30°.

Over the next fortnight, I’ll be building further resources and expanding modules to give students even more opportunities to explore maths in meaningful, applied ways. I’ll also keep refining Moodle behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly for learners.
