Stepping Through Patterns: Sequences & Solving Equations

It’s been a busy and productive fortnight on Maths Magician, with students continuing to build strong algebra foundations. Two new modules are now live, each designed to strengthen problem-solving skills and boost confidence going into the next half term.

News & Updates

The first new module focuses on Sequences, a key topic at both Foundation and Higher GCSE. Students explore number patterns, term-to-term rules, nth term formulas, and how sequences connect to algebraic thinking. Understanding sequences helps learners recognise structure, predict behaviour, and build fluency when spotting patterns in exam questions.

The second module adds More Solving Linear Equations, giving students deeper practice with multi-step equations, brackets, and unknowns on both sides. These problems help build accuracy and persistence — two skills that translate directly to exam success.

Together, these two modules reinforce some of the most important algebraic techniques in the GCSE course.

Tips for Success

  • In sequences, always identify whether the pattern is arithmetic (constant difference) or other — this makes finding the nth term far easier.

  • For equations, write each step clearly. If the unknown appears on both sides, draw a line down the middle and work systematically.

  • Check your answers by substituting back into the original equation — it’s a powerful habit!

🔦 Level-Up Spotlight

This has been the strongest XP fortnight so far! Learners have pushed deeper into the Level-Up system than ever before:

  • One student has now reached Level 5, with a total close to 800 XP — an incredible achievement.

  • Several others have moved firmly into Level 4, with progress bars well underway.

  • Many more students are advancing strongly through Levels 2 and 3, showing brilliant consistency.

More than 25 students have continued earning XP this fortnight — a clear sign of commitment and steady learning.

Keep climbing! Every XP point represents new skills, new confidence, and new success.

Puzzle of the Fortnight

Solution to last week’s puzzle – The Linear Mystery:

A line with gradient 3 passing through (2, 1) has the equation:

y - 1 = 3(x - 2)

y = 3x - 5

✅ The line was y = 3x - 5.

This week’s puzzle – The Sequence Stepper:

A sequence begins:

7, 12, 17, 22, 27, …

👉 What is the nth term of this sequence?

What’s Next

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be expanding more algebra, graphing, and problem-solving modules — as well as adding more AI-powered questions to support instant feedback. The progress this term has been excellent. Keep going, keep earning XP, and keep enjoying the journey!
