Frequently Asked Questions

What level should a student be working at?

I have devised a schedule of work that goes from Level 1 to Level 14. Of course every student is different and can work at a level suitable for them, but as a general guide Years 7 - 9 should be working at levels 1-5.

Students in year 10 should work at levels 6 - 10 if they place to do the foundation paper and from levels 6 - 14 if they plan to do the higher paper.

However, students don’t have to follow this plan at all, all modules can be found using a search bos. This means that students can select anything that fits in with the work they are doing at school or would like to complete.

I don’t have the time to do everything.

Ideally, students should complete some maths work every week. I suggest some independent work and either a group tutorial or a 1-2-1 lesson. Students choose a module to work on, in the module is an assessment.

Upon completing the assessment, the work is marked and feedback and guidance is give as to the students next steps. The guidance will suggest the next work to be completed and will be added to the module. After the work within a module is completed the student does a review which can be compared with the assessment and will show progress.

Students complete as much or as little as they can. Students have different commitments and experience tells me that different schools give varying amounts of homework, so there are no deadlines for Maths Magician. When work is completed, it is marked, feedback given and next steps suggested, so there is always the next thing ready to complete, when the student is ready.

How long does a student have to complete the work?

There is no time limit for when modules need to be completed, there are no actual deadlines. Students decide for themselves. Of course, the main deadline is when the student has their final exam at the end of Year 11.

Some students only complete work within tutorial time. Some students do additional work in between tutorials. Every school has different levels of homework, so the student can prioritise their own school work over Maths Magician if necessary.

The tutorials are a good point of contact with time set aside for dedicated maths work.

I only need help on a few topics, do I need to sign up for the whole year?

Subscriptions are £7.50 per week with a flexible option to book a group lesson or individual lesson as required, paying the top up amount of £7.50 or £22.50 at time of booking the lesson.

Group tutorials cost £15 for an hour.

Individual tutorials cost £30 for an hour.

All students are given access to the content on Showbie. You will be given a one-time code to access Showbie, which you will use throughout your time with Maths Magician. Most students attend tutorials weekly during term time, rarely missing a week.

Will I be working with other students?

Other students will be accessing the service and will be in the same ‘class’ as you on Showbie. However, everything submitted by the student is only seen by me..

With individual lessons only the student and myself are on the call.

If attending group tutorials the classes have a maximum of 5 students. Each student has their own breakout room. Students do not interact with each other. I move between each breakout room ensuring each student has work to do, understands the work and help as and when necessary.
